Recently, I went to a birthday party where three of the seven-year-old attendees were named Sophia. Indeed, Sophia is a newly popular (and always lovely) name!
But today, I want to introduce you not to Sophia, but to Sofii...
And while Sofii's not a person, she may turn out to be your best friend!
Sofii.org is a free website for nonprofit fundraisers in search of ideas and best practices. The name "Sofii" stands for "showcase of fundraising innovation and inspiration."
Fundraising writing guru Tom Ahern always points his trainees to Sofii. And I'm very glad he told me about it, because it's a unique compilation of authoritative voices in fundraising.
Reading Sofii feels like attending a top-notch fundraising conference... and did I mention that it is free?
The site is U.K.-based -- so you'll discover some British spellings and lots of references to fundraising in Europe and elsewhere. (Visiting Sofii is so much cheaper than buying a plane ticket to London!) But don't let this international identity put you off if you're in the good ol' U.S. of A. and so are your programs and donors -- the information is perfectly applicable to you, too.
In fact, the editors of the site write that they're thinking about holding their next "I Wish I'd Thought of That" conference somewhere in the United States!
To give you a sense of the breadth of Sofii, here are some posts that might fascinate you:
- Overview of a Scottish capital campaign that raised more than 12 million pounds for an art museum -- I love the egalitarian idea of "an alphabetical list of names being published on Kelvingrove’s walls, with those who donated £500,000 presented equally beside those who donated £5.00."
- 14+ pages of direct mail campaign packages that are exceptional
I'm so glad that I met Sofii! Hope you enjoy knowing her, too!
